student news daily

In the article "Using Ipads before bed can lead to poo nights of sleep," Stephan Adams explains explains that using Ipads or Samsung's Galaxy Note can lead to poor nights of sleep according to research. People use their phones or tablets to surf the web, go on Facebook or email before going to sleep. But whats causing them from a good night rest is the light thats coming from there screens. The light thats coming from their screen acts as if its daylight. So it convince the brain that its still daytime. Any time of light can make it hard to go to sleep, but a light of a shorter wavelength can suppress nocturnal melatonin. The brighter the light is and the longer the exposure is, the more hard it is to fall asleep. Cell phones and tablets are portable so people take them into the bedroom. They also tend to hold the cell phones or tablet closer to their eyes than a big screen such as a computer or television. Researchers from the Lighting Research Center are saying that if you look at a tablet screen for more than two hours " it leads to a suppression of our natural melation levels as the devices emit optical radiation at short wavelenghts." "Although turning off devices at night is the ultimate solution, it is recommended that if these devices are used at night displays are dimmed as much as possible and that the time spent on them before bed should be limited." Also disruption of sleep patterns can lead to an risk of obesity and breast cancer. I think that its bad for your eyes and it can disrupt your sleep. You cant get a good night rest and in the morning you end up tired.

Attention Disorder

In “Attention Disorder or Not, Pills to Help in School,” Alan Schwarz explains that A.D.H.D (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is just “an excuse”. The article includes quotes from Dr. Anderson.  Dr. Anderson says, “We’ve decided as a society that it’s too expensive to change the kid’s environment. So we have to change the kid.” He also calls the disorder “made up” to prescribe pills to treat children’s true problems which is poor academic performances in inadequate schools. He thinks this because the children he sees with academic problems are mismatched with their environment. He says this because he thinks their families can’t afford tutoring or family counseling. Some experts reported that the drugs have side effects which include growth suppression, increased blood pressure, and sometimes psychotic episodes. In 2007, 9.5 percent of 4-17 years old Americans had this disorder. The Drug Enforcement Administration calls the medications as “Schedule II Controlled Substances” because they are addictive. Dr. William Graf (a pediatrician and a child neurologist) said that families should choose whether the drug Adderall can benefit their child. I also think that it’s an excuse and I don’t think there a thing as A.D.H.D. I think it’s just the kids and their behavior and how they carry themselves. Kids have so much energy in the day so I think that why they act like that. I don’t think that girls are as hyperactive as boys. Boys have more energy than girls. Therefor they should do activities such as football, soccer, basketball, etc. So when they could use all there energy and by the time the days over there tired.

In "Texting May Be Taking a Toll," Katie Hafner explains what teenagers do everyday which is texting. When there texting all day, everyday, it leads to anxiety, distraction in school, falling grades, repetitive stress injury, and sleep deprivation. Teenagers send and receive an average of 2,272 text messages per month and almost 80 messages a day. Dr.Martin Joffe said, "Then you hear that these kids are responding to texts late at night. That's going to cause sleep issues in an age group that's already plagued with sleep issues."

Also Sherry Turkle, a psychologist said that it might cause a shift in the way of adolescents development. "Among the jobs of adolescence are to separate from your parents, and to find the peace and quiet to become the person you decise you want to be," Turkle said. Psychologists want to see teenagers break free from their parents as they grow into autonomous adults.

Texting can be a toll to teenagers thumbs also.  A 15 year old girl name Annie Wagner used to text on her phone as fast as she typed on a regular keyboard. After a few months she noticed a painful crap in her thumbs. But lately she been using the iPhone she got for her 15th birthday. She said texting is slower and less painful.

Greg Hardesty, a reporter in Lake Foirest, Calif., said that his 13 year old daughter, Reina, had 14,528 texts messages in one month. He said she would keep the phone on after going to bed, and switch it to vibrate and would wait for it to light up. After a while her grades dropped and her parents confiscated her phone. Without her phone her grades have improved and they gave her phone back. But her text message limit was change to 5,000 per month.

I think parents shouldn't take the kids phone. Its there responsibility to do good in school and concentrate. Cell phones a privilege. I think if kids are taking advantage of the phone, parents should take them.

Cheating

In "Studies Find More Students Cheating, With High Achievers No Exception", Richard Perez-Pena point outs that the majority of people, high and low achievers cheats. Cheating has Been uncovered over the last year at some of the nation's competitive schools. In the article, Richard Perez-Pena explains how students behavior show that a majority of students violate standards of academic integrity to some degree. High School achievers do it too also. There is evidence that the problem has worsened over the last few decades. Perez-Pena interviewed Donald L. McCabe, a professor at Rutgers University Business school and a leading researcher on cheating. He said "There have always been struggling students who cheat to survive, but more and more, there are students at the top who cheat to succeed." Internet access has made cheating easier. The Internet has changed attitudes, which made downloading, searching, cutting, and pasting has loosened some ideas of ownership. Mr.Wasieleski said, "Students are surprisingly unclear about what is plagiarism or cheating. Mr.Wasieleski is an associate professor of management. A lot of projects and research studies have shown frequently reinforcing standards, can lesson cheating for both students and cheating. In 2010 Yale undergraduates took a survey about school's policy on academic honesty, by The Yale Daily News. Most of them that took it were unsure about the rules on sharing or recycling their work. High School students took a survey too, at Josephson Institute of Ethics. They found that three-fifths of the students admit to having cheated in there previous year. Also about four fifths of the students say that their own ethics are above average. I think that cheating is wrong. People do it all the time but the people that cheat won't learn anything.
